Have started regular slot on Broadcast in the UK. Will post on my Vox blog first but only visible to those in my neighbourhood. If you want to check out the first in a series click here.
Great day to end with.
Went to see Lionel Shriver discuss the "fictionalisation" of news to create narrative for the masses followed by a fabulously entertaining and informative presentation by the "inventor of the internet", Vint Cerf.
A little bit more wandering the corridors...
...before arriving back in sunny London.
Started the day slightly hungover, having ended the evening / night / morning at 2.30 chatting to Finn and Diane at the The George. Quickly got woken up by Kirsty Walk interviewing Gerry McCann discussing (yes discussing) the role of media in the search for Madeleine. One of the most surreal things I've seen for a VERY long time. Kirsty did a great job. Not sure what to say about Gerry McCann.
That then was followed by a really interesting session with Bebo and the folks from LonelyGirl. The best so far apart from Paxman. Really insightful about what is being developed for the web and some interesting learnings for us at DO Studios also.
All topped with (apart from a boring session at the end) by, yes... Jim'll Fix It. What a laugh and how great to see the legend live.
Lots of good chats with old buddies and some new. Let's see what tonight brings.
What a mixed beginning... let's hope we get some more consistent quality.
The Joost session was truly disappointing. Janus is clearly a very bright guy and based on people I spoke to also fascinating and nice. His presentation was average but it soooooo could have been salvaged by the interviewer, who was truly dreadful. A real real missed opportunity.
This was definitely made up ten-fold by Paxman's MacTaggart.
Definitely an impassioned, humorous and well crafted speech about the media industry. Slightly longer than my attention span at the end of the day but of those that I've attend, definitely the best. Post later on key take-outs from this.
Registered, bumped into a couple of friends from Cartoon Network, AtomFilms, MTV etc. and had a bite to eat.
Catching up on emails... 80 since this morning... madness.
Off to see session with Janus Friss from Joost and then hear what Jeremy Paxman has to say for himself, which should be fun.
Off to the Edinburgh TV Festival tomorrow.
2006 was the first I felt they took online seriously so lets see what happens this year. Joost and Google presenting so here's hoping.
Will report back as and when I can.
Have been working on Shaun The Sheep and, as per previous post about the impact of embedding video and the blogosphere on the definition of what a channel is, here's my Shaun spoke. Enjoy!
When you can (finally as part of Vox's beta program) embed videos from the likes of AtomFilms (and any other channel that offers this functionality) into your own Vox blog (although still clumsily), are these channels actually hubs with millions of spokes reaching out across people's personal sites?
Why should AtomFilms (or other new media hubs) care where their videos are embedded as long they sell the advertising that goes before them and their brand is identified with a certain editorial tone?
Now that will be something for "traditional" media companies to try and get their heads around.
Off to MIPTV week of the 16th. Usually very worthwhile when you weigh it all up.
- Value - one or two conference sessions that shed real light, meetings that open new doors and introductions to interesting people
- Fun - the catching up with friends, drinks late at night and spending time with colleagues over dinner
- Pain - most conference sessions (especially those you haven't strategically placed yourself to duck out of), no space to breath, having to be polite 24/7
This year should be interesting as we've recently announced our launch of Digital Outlook Studios and online is generally playing an ever more important part in TV (as we all know). Will be interesting to see whether people get the impact of social media and search, rather than the more obvious YouTube noise. Have a couple of meetings lined up so lets see what comes of it all.
Will report on developments hopefully during (subject to how much time we have) and certainly after the conference.
If any Vox-peeps are going, would love to meet.
Damn it's tough to find good people.
Have a couple of roles open for some great folks to join the team. Click on www.digital-outlook.com/jobs to find out more. We're also always interested to hear from talented designers, illustrators, developers, marketeers, project managers and strategy folks interested in digital entertainment.
Anyone know people, interested in moving or have experience they wish to share at what works best to find elusive talent... bring it on.
